Academic conference on Edith Stein in Wrocław – 2026
The Edith Stein Society in Wrocław and the Faculty of Theology at UKSW (Warsaw) invite you to the academic conference “From the Study ‘On the Problem of Empathy’ to Saint of the Universal Church,” to be held on October 12, 2026, at the Edith Stein House in Wrocław, Poland. This academic session will commemorate the 110th anniversary of St. Edith Stein receiving her doctorate in philosophy and will serve as an opportunity to reflect on her scholarly achievements, philosophy, body of work, and legacy.
Invitation to this year’s academic conference on Edith Stein in Wrocław
One of Poland’s most fascinating academic traditions is the renewal of the doctoral degree—a ceremony taking place at least fifty years after the oath was sworn during the original conferral. Such renewals are typically granted to the most distinguished scholars, whose creative commitment, pursuit of truth, and fidelity to their doctoral oath have formed the core of their academic careers and lives. When undertaking the renewal process, the university community consults relevant bodies to assess the merits of the renewed conferral. In inviting you to this year’s edition of the Stein conferences, we wish to draw upon this significant tradition and encourage reflection on key aspects of the biography, work, and influence of this Co-Patroness of Europe—viewed through the lens of her research, the issues she addressed, her methodological approaches, and her experiences ranging from successes to creative crises. The figure of Edith Stein—as a student, researcher, accomplished philosopher, translator of scholarly and spiritual literature, and author of numerous treatises, essays, literary works, and occasional writings—is revealed in the scope of her Collected Works (ESGA), a comprehensive edition spanning 28 volumes. The diversity of St. Edith Stein’s body of work and her personality offer an opportunity not only for a shared gathering and scholarly reflection but also to commemorate the 110th anniversary of her receiving a doctorate in philosophy.

Note: The organizers do not charge a conference fee, nor do they cover travel or accommodation expenses. Plans are in place to publish conference proceedings that receive a positive editorial review.
